Facebook and Twitter for Writers

Twitter_FBWhat’s an endlessly hot topic in discussions between writers?

Using social media!

Some writers swear by it. They understand it and incorporate Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and GoodReads in their everyday networking efforts. Not all of these writers enjoy it – but they recognise the impact that social media can have.

Some writers hate it. They just don’t ‘get’ Twitter, Facebook, etc etc and resent it when others suggest that it’s a good idea. They can be heard muttering things like “Can’t I just write my books without worrying about all this stuff?” They sit there and stare at their Facebook page or Twitter account and wonder what to do with it.

I’ve heard plenty of differing suggestions on using social media, but probably the most valuable was “Don’t overthink it”. Engage with people on your Facebook page as you would with friends; follow people on Twitter who sound interesting and just tweet a few words about a current hot topic, share a quote or give a useful link.

  1. Thanks for that Marg. This is a hot topic between me and my writer friends at the moment. Good to know we are not alone trying to figure out what is the best way to go with social media.

    • Hi Cassie,

Yes, social media… aaargh. I’m trying to change the way I think about it; not just a chore but something that can be enjoyable if controlled. I picked up Kristen Lamb’s book – it looked good and got good reviews.

Good luck out there in the big wide world of social media…

  2. Hi Marg,

You probably don’t remember me but you were my tutor years ago for the Mystery and Crime Writing course through the Australian College of Journalism! I completed a novel during Nanowrimo last year and I am currently editing it to see if it can make it in the wide, wide world. That experience made me realise that I can write a novel even when I’m working full time etc so now I’m working on completing the comic mystery novel I was writing when I did the course, together with one for young adults (about a teenage witch and a bushranger).

Sorry. Banged on a bit there. What I really meant to say was that there is this great application/program called Hootsuite where you can link all your social media and just put in one update and it will go to Twitter, Facebook, WordPress – whatever you nominate. It’s easy to use and free.

Thanks for all your excellent advice over the years.

    • Hi Kate,

Funny you should be talking about the Crime and Mystery Course – I’m right in the middle of editing the Busy Writer’s Tips on Writing Crime and Mystery! Congrats on finishing a novel for NaNo (more than I did!) and I wish you luck with it. I’m so glad you’re finishing the comic novel you started. (I like the sound of the teenage witch and the bushranger, too!)

Yes, I do own Hootsuite – actually I upgraded to the Pro version – and it is great for keeping everything in one place.

And as far as the advice goes, you’re welcome – as you can see, people like you also help to pass along extra tips! Gotta love a blog.

Keep me posted on the progress of your various novels!

  3. I just bought Kristen Lamb’s book after reading your post, Marg. Looking forward (with trepidation – gulp) to a foray into the social media world.
